China offered technical expertise and research assistance for a Sri Lankan proposal to use bamboo bio-fences in addressing human–elephant conflict.
The initiative was discussed during a visit led by Deputy Environment Minister Anton Jayakodi to the International Center for Bamboo and Rattan in Beijing, according to a report issued on 28 July.
The delegation explored cultivation methods, processing technologies and bamboo products. Sri Lanka requested support for the proposed fencing approach, while the Chinese side expressed willingness to share research and practical expertise.
The discussions also considered possible livelihoods linked to bamboo industries. The report described a cooperation proposal; it did not provide field-trial results demonstrating that bamboo fences would reliably prevent elephant incursions.
