A national early childhood initiative launched at Temple Trees on 10 January set out to improve preschool quality and professional support for educators across Sri Lanka.
The STEP UP programme forms part of Clean Sri Lanka. Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya led the launch, bringing together education, health, child affairs and public administration institutions.
The programme envisages formal quality standards for early childhood development centres alongside training delivered at national level. Its opening activities included the distribution of learning materials and specialised resource kits to 900 centres, supported by UNICEF and the Health Promotion Bureau.
The resources were designed around ten identified values for young children. Preschool teachers from different parts of the country attended the event, which placed educator development alongside improvements in learning environments.
