Plans to develop 16 villages in Matara District were outlined under the Deya Nanwana Sapiri Gamak community productivity programme, according to an official report issued on 4 April.
Industry and Entrepreneurship Development Minister Sunil Handunnetti discussed the initiative with community leaders and public officers at the District Secretariat.
The national programme envisaged selecting 322 villages, with one from each Divisional Secretariat division. Its scope extended beyond income generation to education, sanitation, household management, social wellbeing and environmental conservation.
The Productivity Secretariat and Clean Sri Lanka Secretariat were to implement the programme under Divisional Secretaries’ supervision. The announcement concerned planned development and coordination; it did not state that work in all selected villages had been completed.
