Sri Lanka’s men’s and women’s rugby teams returned home on 19 May after winning both titles at the inaugural Central Asia South Asia Sevens tournament in Tashkent.
The men defeated India 31–10 in the final, while the women beat Kazakhstan 27–0 to complete the double success in Uzbekistan.
Captains Srinath Sooriyabandara and Charani Liyanage led the teams, which received a welcome at Bandaranaike International Airport. Rugby officials, sports representatives, relatives and supporters attended.
The two results gave Sri Lanka the first men’s and women’s titles at the new regional competition. The homecoming recognised both squads’ achievements and their contribution to the country’s rugby programme.
