150th Birth Anniversary of Anagarika Dharmapala commemorated

The 150th birth anniversary of Srimath Anagarika Dharmapala was commemorated under the patronage of President Mahinda Rajapaksa at the Independence Square in Colombo this morning (September 17). Large number of different celebrations marking the 150th anniversary of Anagarika Dharmapala’s birth is being held across Sri Lanka as well as in India, UK and many parts of the world.  He is remembered especially for his campaigns to preserve Sinhalese Buddhist culture and the promotion of Buddhist education in Sri Lanka and rest of the world.

President Rajapaksa welcomes President of China Xi Jinping

Sri Lanka warmly received the President of Peoples’ Republic of China and General Secretary of the Chinese Communist Party and Chairman of the Central Military Commission, Xi Jinping at the Bandaranaike International Airport this afternoon (16 September). It is only after 28 years that a Chinese head of state engaging in an official tour in Sri Lanka. President Mahinda Rajapaksa and First Lady Shiranthi Rajapaksa were present at the air port to welcome Chinese President Xi Jinping and First Lady Peng Liyuan.

Uva Province Sports Complex in Badulla vested with the public

President Mahinda Rajapaksa vested the newly built Uva Provincial Sports Complex at Vincent Dias Stadium in Badulla to the public recently. A sum of 350 million rupees has been spent for this complex.  There are facilities for 25 sport events including athletics, cricket, soccer and rugby and indoor sports such as volleyball, basketball, badminton and squash. It also comprises of a top class swimming pool, fulfilling a long dream of swimmers in the Uva Province. After opening the new indoor sports complex equipped with state-of-the-art facilities, the President also opened the new swimming pool complex by turning a new page in Uva sports.

Etampitiya Drinking Water Project and Uva Migrant Resource Centre

President Mahinda Rajapaksa commenced the construction work of the Etampitiya Drinking Water Project in the Hali-Ela constituency of Badulla District on 12 September. The project which will benefit around 1500 families in the area is expected to be completed by 2016. A sum of 2,250 million rupees will be spent on the pure drinking water project. The President was also engaged in a friendly conversation with a large gathering present at the Etampitiya town.
