Sri Lanka’s 68th year of Independence celebrated in Milan, Italy
The newly established Sri Lanka Consulate General Office in Milan together with Sri Lankan expatriates and the Italian well-wishers celebrated 68th Anniversary of the National Day of Sri Lanka on 04th February 2016, at the Chancery building.
The proceedings commenced with Consul General, Pradeepa Saram ceremonially hoisting the National Flag followed by the National Anthem of Sri Lanka. After observing two minutes of silence for fallen heroes, the traditional oil lamp was lit prior to the multi - religious observances.
Venerable Wathogala Dhammika Thero, Chief Incumbent of Brescia Buddhist Temple conducted the Buddhist religious performances. Rev. Fr. Malcom Perera, Chaplain of Milan conducted the Christian Prayers while Mr. Shridharan performed Hindu rites. Maulavi Sheikh Abdulla performed Islamic prayers. Buddhists Priests from Milan Lankaramaya, Dhammanikethanaya and Asapuwa were also present.
The Independence Day messages of H.E. the President, Hon. Prime Minister and the Hon. Foreign Minister were read for the gathering. Consul General, in her address said this Independence Day is unique as it comes at a time when Sri Lanka had achieved significant stability in the political, economic and social spheres. By opening the Consulate, the government has honoured and acknowledged the valuable contribution made by the Sri Lankan community in Italy, she further added. She appreciated the active participation of the community and expressed the hope that they will become more involved over the coming months to lend their support to carrying forward the message of Sri Lanka in their adopted communities.
The ceremony concluded with the guests enjoying a traditional breakfast with milkrice and sweetmeat including Kewum and Kokis.
