New York - Sri Lankan community in New York celebrates 67th Independence Day

The 67th Independence Day of Sri Lanka was celebrated by the Sri Lankan community on 07 February at the Snug Harbor Music Hall, Staten Island, New York. Despite the bitterly cold weather and piled up snow, the event attracted over 1000 Sri Lankans and expatriates from different ethnic, religious, political and social groups living in the Tri-State area.

FOREIGN MINISTER SAMARAWEERA CONCLUDES SUCCESSFUL VISIT TO THE US CAPITAL

Foreign Minister Mangala Samaraweera visited Washington DC from 11-12 February. The visit which was his first to the US capital since assuming office as the Minister of Foreign Affairs followed the visit of US Assistant Secretary of State Nisha Biswal to Colombo on 2-3 February and coincided with the completion of 30 days in office of the new Government in Sri Lanka.

President MR holds bilateral talks at UN HQ

President Mahinda Rajapaksa, who is in New York City to attend 69th United Nations General Assembly which is being held in the UN Headquarters, held bilateral discussions with several state leaders on Tuesday afternoon. They included the Nepalese Prime Minister Sushil Koirala, the Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos Calderón and the Secretary General of the Commonwealth Kamalesh Sharma.

President Rajapaksa addresses 69th UNGA

President Mahinda Rajapaksa addressing the 69th United Nations General Assembly last evening (Wednesday, 24 Sep) said that the current functioning system of the United Nations needs fresh examination in order to enhance its credibility. The UN role in advancing international peace, security and prosperity is crucial in the contemporary world. However, in order to gain the confidence and goodwill of the international community, one of the essential requirements is consistency of standards across the board without any perception of selectivity or discrimination. To be successful, this process must involve de-politicisation of the UN systems and mechanisms and they must stop being hostage to different forms of funding, he elaborated.
