Sydney artist Ramesh Mario Nithiyendran​ has won the Sidney Myer Fund Australian Ceramic Art Award.

Held at Shepparton Art Museum, the biennial prize is worth $50,000 and is considered the premier national award for artists working in ceramics.

Born in Sri Lanka, Nithiyendran has looked for inspiration in Hindu religious art in its most sexed-up forms: the worship of Shiva as represented by phallic totems is a particular touchstone in his work.

His CV lists shows titled One Hung BitchPolished Turds and Dickheads. Is he the bad boy of ceramics?
